Topic > Film Analysis: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

“The Great Gatsby”, film adaptation directed by Baz Luhrmann in 2013 is almost as great as the novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. The Great Gatsby is a literary classic set in the 1920s in the fictional town of West Egg. The story is based on Nick Carraway, a Midwestern war veteran in the summer of 1922, who finds himself haunted by the past lifestyle of his mysterious, fabulously wealthy neighbor Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. This film adaptation compared to the novel is very interesting. It is also easily understandable and holds the viewers' attention throughout the film. In this film the scenarios, in most cases, are very similar to the description given in the novel. The actors and actresses in this film are well chosen for the most part. The costumes were well designed and fit the description of the time period provided, which was the 1920s. A very important aspect that should not be ignored is the narration in the film which increases the effectiveness of the film. The Great Gatsby's Nick Carraway (Toby Maguire) helps reunite lost loves Jay Gatsby, his neighbor (Leonardo DiCarprio) and Daisy. Buchanan, his cousin (Carey Mulligan). Only in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation does Carraway tell the story from inside a sanatorium, where he is led to write everything down as a form of therapy. Fitzgerald's Nick refers to Gatsby as "the man who gives his name to this novel", so the form of the text of The Great Gatsby written by Nick is almost the same as Luhrmann's film and is expressed more deeply in the story than to Fitzgerald. In the film Luhrmann showed us how Nick wrote the story by hand, then typed it, and finally amassed his complete manuscript. It gives the name Gatsby......middle sheet......the novel. In conclusion, Baz Luhrmann's version of the film adaptation of The Great Gatsby was indeed very successful and faithful to the novel. The casting was in fact almost perfect because most of the actors like Toby Maguire (Nick Carraway), Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), Carey Mulligan (Daisy Buchanan), Joel Edgerton (Tom Buchanan) and Jason Clarke (George Willson) all portray their character wonderfully as described in the novel. The scenarios were great because they were very descriptive to the scenes in the novel. The use of Computer Generated Imagery technology was perfect because it highlighted the scenarios making them very vivid, realistic and pleasing to the eye. The costumes used in the film were very creative, wonderful and perfect because they suited the class, the personality of each of the characters and also suited the historical period of the years '20..
