Dorothy May Kinnicutt was an American interior decorator. She was born in New Jersey in 1910. Although her nickname may suggest someone of religious origin, whose life is dedicated to prayer and penance. Sister Parish actually got her nickname from her childhood as she was commonly called "Sister". Her older brother came up with this nickname when she was younger because she was the only girl in a family with five children. The sister married Harry Parish in 1930. Together they had two daughters and a son. And to this day his granddaughter still runs an interior design company in his name. She is widely recognized for developing the interior decorating style known as "American Country Style". The sister never knew her grandmother because she died shortly after she was born, but she remembers her grandparents' house as "big and dark and moldy and full of polar bear rugs and moose heads and antlers everywhere." His parents were wealthy and spent a considerable amount of money on trips to Europe, hoping that the popularization of art and architecture would improve their children's education. His style has been defined as baroque and freewheeling. Sister Parish has been credited with developing the American Country Style, founded in the 1960s. The sister had a soft spot for the English country house look. He usually used upholstered armchairs, brocade sofas, knitted throws and four-poster beds. Continuity and character along with color and comfort were the foundation of Sister's decoration and style. When redecorating a room, it was her tradition to roll a tea cart around the house, clearing out anything she deemed unnecessary, often intimidating customers. In 1933, during the Depression, Sorella decided to officially dedicate himself to the interior decoration sector. He was very young when he opened his business and even stated: “He had never opened a window or poured a glass of water. In 1962, after making a name for herself, she created a solid partnership with Albert Hadley. And then the Parish-Hadley company was born. Their company motto was that rooms are for people and that we want to make them as attractive and comfortable as possible. She decorated her first country home after she and her family moved to New Jersey. The house was a huge success and all her neighbors started hiring her to decorate their homes. She lived next door to Senator Joseph Frelinghuysen and he asked her to decorate a new restaurant nearby.
