Unfortunately, due to the huge amount of immigrants, homes were constantly divided into smaller quarters. The rapidly industrializing city was unable to keep up with the demand for housing. Families would be crammed into poorly lit spaces and would also lack plumbing and ventilation. These areas were called tenements. Naturally, these poor living conditions led to clashes and riots. Because of this, immigrants were seen as bringing crime, vice, and immorality to America.2 This could be said to have changed American culture.
