What defines a greater tragedy? Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are complex, dynamic characters who have tragic flaws. While Macbeth is extremely docile, Lady Macbeth is controlling and manipulative. Macbeth's fickleness leads him to become a traitor, a murderer and ultimately leads to his death. Lady Macbeth's manipulative behavior leads her husband to do horrible things, resulting in enormous guilt and suicide. Overall, Macbeth's story is ultimately more tragic than that of his spouses because his fickleness leads to a less complete and meaningless life. Shakespeare helps his audience understand the remorse that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth feel by using hallucinations and visions. On the surface, the hallucinations represent the mental health of the hallucinator, however, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's delirious state may also represent their remorse.
