Sleep deprivation can affect your mental and physical state. It can be harmful to your life in many ways. It can affect a person's motor functioning and behavior. Many hours without sleep can affect cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength. A full 24 hours without sleep can give a person an adrenaline rush that would keep them going for a few more hours. Lack of sleep affects people differently in a number of situations. You may be different with partners than when you are at school or work, as well as when you play a sport or exercise. Lack of sleep overtime affects people mentally and can be very harmful to their health. At school and/or at work, lack of sleep can affect cognitive and motor functioning. The ability to be able to physically perform or do something active is not as affected. “Studies have shown that 30-64 hours of sleep deprivation affects simple, selective reaction times and tasks involving high levels of cognitive functioning.” (Scott, McNaughton, Polman, 2006, pg.1) The ability to think clearly and process information clearly may be impaired. A person who does not sleep well while at work and/or school may not be paying attention as well as someone who is sleeping adequately and may miss information. Lack of sleep also increases your stress levels as you have less ability to focus on the choices you make at work and/or school. Overtime due to sleep deprivation can be detrimental to your grades or enable a person to be a good employee. Exercising with a few hours of sleep deprivation can make your workout more difficult and slower to perform. Many studies have been conducted on sleep deprivation during exercise.
