Teen Wilderness Camps are special camps where parents send their troubled teenagers when they feel there are no other options for their children. These camps are in the middle of nowhere and children are forced to walk for hours, sleep in tents and go without adequate sanitation for weeks, or sometimes even months. Teen wilderness camps have come under fire many times for injuries and even deaths that have occurred, which has raised questions about whether or not these types of programs should be a legal option. Promoters of teen wilderness camps highlight many positive aspects of these types of places. . Teens in these camps are always under the supervision of trained and qualified counselors. Weekly therapy sessions are held where campers can meet individually with a therapist. These teenagers are also taken away from their previous environment and placed hundreds of miles away from drugs, alcohol and their friends who may have been a bad influence. However, I believe that the promoters of these camps should look more closely at all the negative aspects. Teen wilderness camps are tough on their campers, and on many occasions they are too tough. While on a hike at Summit Quest Camp in Utah, a camper named Michelle complained of feeling unwell and her counselors accused her of faking it and that it was all in her head (Investigative Reports). Due to the negligence of the consultants Michelle collapsed and died (investigative reports). Her mother sent her to Summit Quest hoping to see her daughter again in a few weeks, but due to the harshness of the camp she will never be able to see her daughter again. Unfortunately, Michelle's tragic story isn't the only stain on the reputation of the wilderness ca...... middle of paper ...... in the past they are giving very few supplies to campers. A minority of people believe that with proper regulation and intervention from the authorities these camps could work for troubled teenagers. While this may solve some of the problems, it does not affect the harsh conditions that teenagers find themselves in. These children will still be forced to walk for kilometers a day under the scorching sun and will not have access to running water or adequate sanitation. Teen wilderness camps may seem like a great option for a parent who thinks they've run out of options, but they're not. Sending your children to one of these camps could leave them with physical and emotional scars and possibly even death. There are many other options parents can consider, but no matter how troubled a teenager is, a wilderness camp should never be an option, because it's like sending your child to make a death wish..
