It is an oil painting created by Titian, an Italian artist. This is the goddess Venus, depicted however as a more naturalistic woman, lying on a bed. She stares directly at the viewer, known as the female gaze, and appears unconcerned about her nakedness. She holds a bouquet of flowers in her right hand and her left hand covers her pubic area. A dog sleeps at the foot of his bed, a symbol of marital fertility. Titian was commissioned by Guidobaldo II della Rovere, then duke, to create his Bride as a "model of education".
