Providing a description of each stage and its application, Lindermann attempts to explain how individuals can complete the three stages in numerous variations. Prewriting “allows us to understand and begin to solve the problem that the stimulus creates for us” (Lindermann 25). Through prewriting, writers “establish what they know” and “elaborate provisional answers” (Lindermann 25). Writing or “the physical act of drafting” (Lindermann 27), is the moment in which the individual aspect of the process comes into full activity. Writers may follow certain rituals to begin writing and complete the draft. The last, rewriting, is a “process that includes everything from correcting small mechanical errors to substantially editing the work” (Lindermann 29). Each step in this process allows for variations, yet there is structure to the writing process that can be taught to a class while still addressing the personal aspect of writing.
