The Metamorphosis is one of Franz Kafka's most famous stories. The story is about a tormented man who turned into an insect. The author wrote the story based on various theories such as Marxism, existentialism, and religious views. It is also the reflection of a hostile world whose main themes are abandonment, alienation and relationship problems. It reveals the struggles of people in modern society where one is overlooked in time of need (Franz 8). The cultural and social setting of the story helps support the main themes of the story. Since the story is a dramatic fiction, it is necessary to explore the style of internal monologue to inform the audience what the protagonist thinks. Samsa's thoughts highlight that “this city is full of hatred and hostility, especially when my parents abandon me and treat me badly. It is unfortunate that the economic situation of some people in the city makes it difficult for them to integrate into society. I imagine that the historical, cultural and social context of the story is based on some disturbing creature. I believe that my role in society is based on historical processes of which I am not aware. I believe that the ethnic tension between three groups which were Jews, Czechs and Germans influences social processes.” Samsa seems to present the civilizational context of the story based on the inspirations of his cultural background. Samsa seems to state that his situational context is a city full of cultural events. Samsa surmises in his mind that “these cultural institutions and processes influence my ideologies and way of thinking.” Samsa seems to indicate that the economic events and social life of the family members were influenced by the historical events that took place in the trailer.... .. middle of the paper .... he also thinks that “the problematic relationship of the people represents the effect of capitalism brought by industrialization to the city. I believe people care more about improving their financial situation without worrying about the effects on other people. My father, for example, doesn't care what I'm going through, as long as he earns money for the family." Samsa finally surmises that his father's hostility towards him demonstrates a lack of appreciation for his money. The main themes of Franz's story were inspired by the historical and cultural events of Prague, the author's city. The city was full of hostility caused by economic status and differences in people's cultural backgrounds. The story is told using interior monologue styles. It focuses on the main character's thoughts and feelings that support the themes of abandonment and troubled relationship.
