Topic > Forgetting: Decay Theory and Interference Theory

Do you ever forget things and get so angry when you remember them at the last minute or just don't remember them at all? “Why do we forget things?” You might say to yourself: This can be caused by a variety of things like being distracted or not paying too much attention to what you needed to remember…etc. There are things you can do to help you remember things. But before you stress out about how much you forget things and blame yourself, you should blame your parents because they could be the reason, as you will learn later in the writing. As I said before, there are different types of forgetfulness, to name a few are Distraction, Misttribution, and Persistent. Distraction occurs when you don't pay close attention to what you learn. (Types of forgetting) And you will most likely forget the information soon. (Types of forgetfulness). You tend not to pay attention and start to isolate yourself (distraction). You have most of your attention on something, which is called "hyperfocus" and this makes a person unaware of the surrounding environment (distraction). Or you distract yourself by focusing on irrelevant thoughts (distraction). For example, do you ever get in the shower and start thinking about things, and before you know it, an hour has already passed because you were too busy thinking and forgot you were in the shower. Incorrect distribution: You remember information correctly, but you are wrong about the source of that information (sparknote). So, for example, “After witnessing a car accident on the highway, Sam tells his friends many details about what he saw. It turns out, however, that there's no way he actually saw some of the details he described and that is, in... half the paper... in that. Failure to conserve is also one of the main reasons (psychology). Sometimes the loss of information has less to do with forgetting and more to do with the fact that it never made it into “long-term” memory, so that's why you quickly forget such simple things (psychology). When you are stressed do you often find yourself forgetting things like where you put your keys or do you forget important things and important events? (Huffington post) This is because stress has a huge impact on memory (huffington post). So next time you're studying for a test, quiz, or even an important exam, make sure you're not stressed while studying. Make sure you are in a comfortable and relaxed environment so you can retain your information.
