When you imagine a nurse in America, you may think of a smiling woman in a pink scrub helping a new mother care for her baby, a comforting hand to hold in a moment of need, or even a soft voice counting: "One, two, three..." before administering an injection. Nursing is a profession dominated by 92% women (US Department of Labor) and is carefully characterized by its commitment to caring for people and promoting healthy living. According to the American Nursing Association Code of Ethics: “The nurse, in all professional relationships, acts with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth and uniqueness of each individual, without restrictions due to considerations of social status or economic, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems.” Because of these professional and altruistic values, it is not surprising that the nursing profession has received the highest rating in Gallup's annual survey of honesty and ethics for the 11th year. 81% of Americans say nurses have “high” or “very high” ethical standards (Gallup). Clearly, the American public holds nurses in high esteem, yet when they turn on the television, these respected individuals are depicted in popular medical dramas as disposable sex objects and subordinate helpers. This unrealistic portrayal of nurses is a reflection of the misogyny of American culture that presents itself through shows like Grey's Anatomy and ABC's Fox's House. Medical drama writers are creative in that they find ways to make scrubs "sexy", however, this nurse's attribute ultimately leads to their mistreatment by the men in the show.
