Topic > Attracting Nontraditional Students into Postsecondary School…

Despite the similarities between traditional and nontraditional students, differences in adult students' experience and perception of education make their transition to education unique university. To successfully recruit and retain non-traditional students, universities must provide resources and incentives to this segment of students. In America, in the mid-1970s, only 30% of all jobs required a high school education (Gonzalez). Today, the reality is that 63% need a post-secondary education (Gonzalez). The huge number of job losses in recent years due to economic decline has had a large impact on the non-traditional student population. With this growing trend in education, universities have to compete for these types of students. Many schools offer attractive packages for non-traditional students; however, others fail to make their university “adult friendly.” To attract these types of students, the administration must implement new policies, procedures, and programs in consultation with the faculty who teach these students. Attracting adult students to public universities means investing in child care, health care plans and financial aid along with additional privileges that extend to course release and selection and admissions requirements. Most nontraditional students have children and providing on-campus child care would be extremely compelling to them. UC Berkeley has a great program in place to help adult students return to earn their degrees (Once Upon a University, A Handbook for Student Parents). UC Berkeley offers on-campus child care. In addition to offering (paid) child care, a student unable to support...... half of a paper ...... focuses on preparing adult students for careers." February 27, 2011.
