Taking ENC 1101 this fall taught me some valuable components regarding composition and college life. Over the past few months, I've learned how to participate in a discussion, how to craft my research using the MLA format, and how critically important it is to submit assignments early. Before taking ENC 1101 I could not participate in a discussion because I was unable to support my points with valid evidence. But now I can continue to engage in a debate and sometimes even win! One of the tasks that I thought contributed the most to developing this skill were the discussion tasks that we submitted online, we had to use examples and support our opinion on the topic we were assigned. Along with the discussion-based assessments I also developed my writing skills and even expanded my vocabulary. Throughout the course, when I submitted new assignments, I tried to incorporate new words, and slowly but surely, I had better word choice in essays, discussions, and even at work. In addition to learning to argue (my boyfriend loves my new skill), I learned to find my research using the MLA format. This new skill is extremely important in college because most, if not all, professors require their papers to be submitted using the MLA format. During my next few years at Valencia and then at the University of Central Florida I will find writing articles much easier because sourcing will practically be second nature. In class we were taught how to use in-text referencing in all of our articles, construct our citation, and how to set up the citation page for our work. Even though in high school we used the MLA format for papers, before taking this course I hadn't noticed how many small details go into the actual quote, the author's name is the last name and then the first name, the commas must be in the right place , page numbers etc. In some lessons you “learn” how to do things, however it is only stored in short term memory because you do not consider it an important or useful attribute for future lessons. Personally, I made sure I knew how to do MLA, in every aspect, reviewed the rules, did my homework, and then reviewed my homework to store this new skill in long-term memory. In this way I successfully transferred the information into long-term memory and turned it into a skill. Another valuable attribute I gained after taking this course is the importance of turning in assignments early! Homework is due at 11:59am and no late submissions will be graded.
