Nevada is the only state in the United States that has legalized prostitution. The law requires that every woman have a state health card and undergo weekly checks carried out by a doctor in order to be employed. Women who test positive for HIV will never again be able to work as prostitutes or face a $10,000 fine (Brents 314). While it may seem like a good system, it has many flaws. First, this system overlooks the physical abuse these women suffer. Studies reported in the U.S. Department of State concluded that 60-75% of women in prostitution were raped, 70-95% were physically assaulted, and 68% met criteria for post-stress disorder. traumatic (Bureau of Public Affairs). Second, a woman with HIV can test negative for up to 12 weeks after contracting the disease. This is enough time to expose a huge number of customers to HIV.
