First, Boyne's novel fits the realistic narrative because the security of Auschwitz was very fragile. For example, Shmuel escaped to the pen to talk to his friend for hours a day! He would never escape the horrendous call repeated several times a day! Furthermore, in Auschwitz there were towers with armed men ready to shoot anyone who wandered away. Additionally, Bruno is said to have slipped under the fence to get to the other side. The fences were dug into the ground several meters deep. They were electrically charged and consisted of barbed wire. Furthermore, if Bruno managed to penetrate, the prisoners could escape! Secondly, the two main characters, Bruno and Shmuel, were completely unaware of their surroundings. Bruno was the son of a Nazi commander and didn't know what a Jew was! Here we have the son of a very high ranking officer in Hitler's army and he doesn't know what his father absolutely despises! He also can't pronounce Auschwitz and the Fuhrer. It says "Out-With" and "Fury". Furthermore, Shmuel spoke German and could not understand what the Nazis were saying. He didn't understand that when people went to work and “disappeared,” they were killed. Lastly, and most importantly, Shmuel, the main character, would never be alive! When the trains are full of
