Considering the topic of Andragogy is truly a foreign topic to me before starting my research for this course. Malcolm Knowles developed a theory he called andragogy that held that adult students learn differently than younger students. In 1959 Malcolm S. Knowles joined the staff of Boston University as an associate professor of adult education. He spent 14 years there during which he produced his key texts: The Modern Practice of Adult Education (1970) and The Adult Learner (1973). These books would solidify his position at the center of adult education discourse in the United States and popularize the concept of andragogy (see below). In 1974 he joined the faculty of North Carolina State University where he was able to develop courses on the "andragogical model". He also updated his key texts and published a new book on self-directed learning (1975) (Smith, 2002). For example, a younger student is more dependent on an adult educator for information about the structure of a task or assignment (CCU, 2011). ). Where an adult student is usually more willing to challenge a topic based on personal experience and beliefs on the topic. I find this enlightening about how I learn as I get older. It's very true in how I look at topics from my personal experience and connect them to what I believe first and foremost, instead of visualizing the information in front of me. Learning as a school-age student occurs in such a way that they are there to continuously learn to gain information for greater gain in a subject, where as adult learners we seek an immediate answer to the question at hand (CCU, 2011). Adults are much more goal-oriented in their approach to education and also understand their...... middle of paper......Learners, Colorado Christian University, retrieved from: http://www.ccu .edu/blogs /cags/2011/10/how-adults-learn-versus-young-students/.Rao,Hanmanth.
