Topic > Association of Southeast Asian Nations: What do they do?

IntroductionThe Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is the major regional grouping in Southeast Asia. It has been widely credited with making major contributions to Southeast Asia in a better, beautiful, stable and prosperous way than accident might otherwise be. ASEAN has also played an important role as a promoter of regional cooperation that is responsible for providing a forum for Southeast Asian countries, major powers and other interested countries to discuss and coordinate approaches to regional issues. The ASEAN Declaration states that the aims and objectives of the Association are to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint ventures in the spirit of equality and partnership to strengthen the foundations for a prosperous community and Pacific Ocean of Southeast Asian Nations. It also promotes regional peace and stability through adherence to justice and respect for the rule of law in relations between countries in the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter. In 1995, ASEAN Heads of State and Government reaffirmed that “cooperative peace and shared prosperity will be the fundamental objectives of ASEAN.” In 1967, ASEAN achieved the highest international profile in any field. It also remains to be seen whether ASEAN will be able to strengthen institutions to ensure security and certainty in the implementation of the agreement and provide an effective mechanism for dispute resolution. The ASEAN Charter was adopted in 2008 to uphold the importance of the dispute resolution mechanism and the Association is currently seeking to develop a more effective mechanism for this purpose. ASEAN continued a great effort to ensure the objectives of the AEC, Economics shows that the membership will take the necessary measures to implement the ASEAN Free Trade Area. Some members, however, continue to face difficulties in meeting the needs of the goal, including structural reforms in laws and regulations.
