From 1890 to 1920, the Progressive Era is a remarkable period of transformation for the United States. Throughout this period, it is not only expanding its role on the world stage, but is going through a transition towards a modernist society, a society of consumerism and mass production; a business-based society, symbolized by assembly lines and the use of "scientific management", and represented by the transition from rural to city life. With such rapid development in a relatively short period, progressive-minded individuals sought to “alleviate the dysfunction, or corruption, or economic injustice, or human suffering that had accompanied the American explosion of industrial growth, urbanization and new ways of life. “ “The natural wonder of the Grand Canyon” is a partial embodiment of the Progressive Era in the United States, as represented by the ideologies of President Theodore Roosevelt and his Square Deal. Without a doubt one of the most influential supporters of the Progressive Era was Theodore Roosevelt. “Roosevelt was a serious, lifelong student of both physical and human nature, of the foundations of the Western philosophical tradition, and of the economic, psychological, and political dimensions of human societies.” As president he urged people to live better, as he believed “individual character dictates the course of history, not economic systems.” It has been said that “Roosevelt made the Progressive Era possible” and that his “politics of virtue” was in many ways “a challenge to to be better, to be more, to be right.” These qualities, combined with an unsurpassed intelligence, gave him the ability not only to want reforms, but also to lead the way in an era when the country was confused. ... middle of paper ...
