The Harappan civilization was a primitive tribe very similar to those of early Mesopotamia. They were able to build their structures with sun-baked mud bricks and built walls to protect their neighborhoods (Duiker). More and more tribes began to flock to this area due to their vast knowledge of iron and how to manipulate it for their own good and protection (History of India). One of these tribes is known as the Aryans. When they arrived they found the area full of farmers and some who still depended on hunting and fishing. The Aryan tribe introduced the caste system, which survived for many centuries. This system allowed the Aryan tribe to control the population by defining key roles in society and then assigning them to the people (History of the United States). This system was composed of certain levels. The first of the class were called Brahmins, who were the priests. Then there were the Kshatriyas who were the warriors, Vaisya, who were made up of merchants, then the Sudras, who were made up of the majority of the population, and finally they were the untouchables, or slaves (Duiker). Also due to the large number of different tribes that came to India, major religions developed, including Buddhism. Siddhartha Gautama founded Buddhism in the 6th century.
