The Greek philosopher Plato's most famous work, The Republic, commonly known as Book VII, featured what came to be known as the "allegory of the cave." Plato wrote: “Men live in illusion.” (Plato). “Was anything real?” (Nicol). This is a quote that comes directly from The Truman Show, published in 1998. Plato's Allegory of the Cave is a story that describes how prisoners would mistake appearance for reality. The Truman Show is a film about a reality television show about a man who lives a so-called "false" life. If The Truman Show presents a current interpretation of Plato's Allegory of the Cave, then perhaps there are numerous ways in which these works can be compared and contrasted. According to Plato, the human race can talk and think without even knowing what reality really is. AND. Plato's Allegory of the Cave was written centuries ago. This allegory is set in a cave where some prisoners have been chained since childhood. These prisoners are facing a wall and behind them there is a large fire and people pass by with objects that cast shadows which the prisoners see and interpret as reality. When one of the prisoners finally breaks free and discovers that "reality" is something completely different from what he and the other prisoners are used to, he finds it almost impossible to tell the other prisoners. The other prisoners are so blinded by their image of reality and are extremely closed-minded. According to Plato's Allegory, general terms, or our everyday language, are simply things we can only grasp with our mind. The Truman Show is a movie about a man, named Truman, who lives a fake life, and this movie was written by Andrew Niccol. Where Truman lives is actually a… medium of paper… while The Truman Show was essentially a movie about a man who lived an ideal impeccable lifestyle, he was simply blind to the real world. In conclusion, these works have many parallels and are immensely similar, but also different.Works CitedSparknotes Editors, . NP Network. November 16, 2013. .Wineapple, Brenda.
