Texting while driving is a growing trend nationwide and is quickly becoming one of the country's leading causes of death. Most drivers think they can be able to text and drive and still stay safe on the roads; however the numbers don't lie! According to the National Safety Council, 1,600,000 accidents a year are caused by someone texting while driving. The laws and penalties for this act are too lax and stricter laws should be enforced. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Fatalities says texting while driving causes nearly eleven teen deaths every day and 330,000 injuries a year. Nearly 25% of all car accidents involve someone who was texting while driving; or 1.3 million accidents. Texting while driving is the number one distraction for most drivers. Five seconds is the minimum time a driver's attention is taken away from the road while using a mobile phone. That said, if you're traveling at 80km/h, five seconds is equivalent to traveling the length of a football pitch without paying attention to the road....
