Topic > Trapped in Geometry: Life of Pi - 800

Life is a repeating cycle of endless trials and unexpected changes. Whether the changes were a test of faith, conviction, or courage, the tests never end. This is very similar to the infinite series of numbers that make up Pi. Faith, however, is the circumference that guided Pi along the circle of trials. The story Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, is the story of how the influence of geometry helped a boy maintain his faith in God and survive the incredible shipwreck that shaped his life forever. Piscine Molitor Patel, also known as Pi Patel, was the main character of the story. Pi had lived a life of faith. However, the boy had never stopped loving God. Mr. Francis Adirubasamy had once mentioned the toy train in the botanical garden: “A train still runs on Sundays for the amusement of children. But before that it ran twice an hour every day... The train had two stops: Roseville and Zootown. Once upon a time there was a zoo in the Pondicherry Botanical Garden (Martel XI).” Pi's faith in God is like the toy train. It's a cycle that needs to be tested over and over again. No matter how busy Pi's life got, he never forgot to slip a prayer into his days. No matter what changes are made in his life, Pi will always return to God. No matter how many times the train stops, it will always continue to travel on its tracks. It didn't matter if the train was broken or stopped working, it could always be repaired and continue running on the tracks. Pi had been trapped by the figures of geometry throughout his journey and throughout his faith. Pi had once observed: “To be a castaway means to be a point perpetually at the center of a circle. As much as things may seem to change... geometry never changes. Your look is... a piece of paper... I hate my nickname, the way that number goes on and on. In life it is important to end things well. Only then can you let go (Martel 285).” The point in “3.14” had Pi concluded before an infinite series of numbers was unleashed in an unexpected direction. This is why the period is a very important component that makes up the Pi.Geometry reference that played an important role in shaping Pi's life. He had guided Pi Patel along his faith in God. He had also created a sense of harmony in the order of things and made Pi's journey what it had become. Evidence in geometry entanglement had shaped Pi's future enormously. Pi's life had taught a lesson about maintaining infinite faith, no matter what unexpected turns became in the never-ending series of the number "3.14..." Works Cited Martel, Yann.
