At the end of the 14th century, feudalism began to face one of the most difficult periods since its formation in the 11th century. The peasants began to demonstrate against their lords; they began to realize that they had power over the lord's domains, since they were the ones who sowed, raised, harvested and finally marketed them to pay taxes, which had to be paid compulsorily within the age of fifteen (in 1381) in every single family. The film develops in this context. “The Showdown” is based on a novel written by Barry Unsworth (“Morality Play,” 1995). Both are set in a place near northern England in 1380, and one of their main topics is power. The power began to collapse due to its own leaders, as a result the peasants got what they thought was right for them. As in the film, this essay will develop this theme. On the one hand, the populations living in feudal domains noticed the abuses of their lords; this caused enormous discontent. On the other hand, the lords did not experience God as the humble creator of humanity, but a supernatural force that granted them the power to do whatever they wanted. The Peasants' Revolt is one of the best-known popular uprisings of the 14th century. Its main causes were the abusive taxes imposed by King Richard II, as the kingdom needed funds to train soldiers to fight abroad. This infuriated the people, who refused to pay the poll tax. This occurred in the village of Fobbing, Essex, on 30 May 1381, where Thomas Bampton, a tax collector, was forced to leave the village without money. Led by Thomas Baker, the Chief Justice of the Common Pleas was attacked, sparking a riot in Kent as well, then advancing into an armed rebellion in London.
