Topic > Advertising: Typical Male Mentality of Society

The world around us is full of advertisements for everything under the sun. Alcohol advertisements are probably the best known. Everyone sees them, watches them and reads them, the old enough to drink crowd and the too young to drink crowd. Advertisements are everywhere; they are inevitable and unavoidable. Each aims at a specific target and the center is the product sold. This particular advertisement for Smirnoff Vodka is interesting in many ways. The first obvious way is a bit of whipped cream on a woman's slender finger with the finger dangerously close to her mouth. Her lips are all dolled up with lipstick and her lips are parted seductively. The ad itself is for Smirnoff Flavored Vodka: Whipped Cream, playing on the idea that alcohol and sex are synonymous. Advertisers and marketers are smart and sneaky. They studied the parts of society that are the most popular. Beyond that, though, they studied our reactions to advertisements and even our thoughts. While we might think that these are just silly marketing campaigns, they are actually clever advertising tricks. The most common trick, and perhaps the most controversial of all, is selling with sex. What this phrase means is that these companies play on the sexual nature and carnal desires of mankind and rely on that reaction to sell their products. The target audience for this particular advertisement is males, both teenagers and twenty-somethings. The fascination with men in their twenties is strongly evident, through the overtly sexual nature of the photography. Although most female features are not visible, the parts that can be seen result in a highly sexualized image. To appeal to the teenage male population it takes a while…half of paper…nothing to be seen as attractive and desired. This ad is effective in the way it is set up and posted, due to the sexually driven society we live in. One problem, however, is that many advertisements are marketed the same way. Featured sex, some kind of fun or exciting element, and eye-catching use of color. Looking at this ad, you can clearly see the typical male mentality of the society we are part of. It is one of sex, parties and pleasure. The culture has remained the same for quite some time now and change is not coming in the near future. It's clear that sexual ads are here to stay, regardless of anyone's feelings. The saddest part of all is that maybe someone will see this advert and think that alcohol is just fun and games; and the responsibility will be long gone. Where will society be then???
