Topic > Persuasive Essay on Gene Therapy - 869

Gene therapy is considered a relatively new form of treatment that could possibly benefit people suffering from one of the thousands of diseases caused by a genetic disorder. Using gene therapy it is possible to treat, prevent or cure these types of diseases1. We have been working on this "medicine of the future" for decades, but there have been no great successes for human patients because gene therapy is not yet fully practical. Human clinical trials are still in the research phase because gene therapy can be unpredictable. Very few patients have received gene therapy. Researchers are working hard to overcome the challenges they face and ensure that gene therapy is safe and effective for humans. Gene therapy works in various ways. It can be used to solve the problem of missing genes by adding a gene to fight a disease3. The main purpose of gene therapy is to help correct mutations in the body by replacing genes that work incorrectly with ones that work correctly. Some mutations are harmless, but others can cause a patient to develop a disease. The DNA in genes is responsible for carrying the information that makes up proteins. Proteins can be considered “the building blocks of our body”1 so if a gene is mutated and becomes harmful it can create many problems. The use of gene therapy can not only prevent a protein from causing damage by restoring its normal function; it can also confer new functions to a protein that benefit the patient2. Through this process we can treat diseases at the source instead of using drugs to hide the symptoms.4. There are several methods used to supply the correct genetic material to defective genes. One of the methods is to use a vector. Vec... half of the paper... the silver lining to all of this is that in some cases patients only need to complete the process once, so multiple payments won't be necessary. The downside is that many patients have to undergo several treatments, which means different payments. There are many people who disagree, but many agree with gene therapy. In fact, a survey conducted more than three years ago showed that more than half of the population in the United States believes that genetic engineering is acceptable. Opinions diverge worldwide because in Japan the survey revealed that over seventy percent consider genetic engineering unacceptable4. Although many people do not agree with gene therapy, they forget that for some people this is a matter of life and death. As long as people keep this in mind and don't get greedy, we should be able to proceed peacefully with gene therapy without any problems.
