Burning and mining coal as a fuel is harmful to the environment, but because it is cheap and easy to find, many people are unwilling to give it up as a source of fuel. One of the problems with coal is that it is limited and non-renewable, so once used we will not be able to reuse it. When coal is burned, it begins to release dangerous toxins such as mercury, lead and arsenic which will then become airborne. It also releases large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. These emissions increase the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere and lead to global warming. The benefits: Coal mining can benefit humans and support the economy in many ways. Coal mining provides many jobs to local communities. It provides over 7 million jobs worldwide. Waste incineration units produce a lot of carbon dioxide gas, about a third of greenhouse gases. It also impacts the health of people who are exposed to toxic emissions by breathing the air or consuming contaminated food and water. Furthermore, when waste is burned by incinerators, it ends up as ash which is then emitted from chimneys, including toxic materials, and ends up in specialized hazardous waste landfills. The benefits: Waste incineration benefits us because as we burn waste it creates energy to heat our homes and generate electricity. Task 3- Naturally damaging earthquakes (tectonic plates)-They are the earth's crust; they move very slowly every year. When tectonic plates slide past each other they cause earthquakes. Earthquakes produce various harmful effects, including damage to the structures of buildings, bridges and other permanent formations which then... middle of paper... we have them and this is how we generate electricity, however, we are also adding carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which represents a major concern for our planet. We can start reducing our use of fossil fuels by switching to renewable energy sources, including: • Wind • Sun • Hydroelectric • Tides and waves • Geothermal • Biomass • Biofuel People can also reduce their use of fossil fuels by doing simple things , for example by turning off the energy. lights and appliances when you leave the room. Walk or cycle instead of driving a car or using public transport for perhaps longer trips. Little things like these will make a big difference, making our planet a better place. Pesticides in Agriculture Instead of using pesticides in agriculture, a better alternative would be biological control. This occurs when a natural predator is released into the growing area, consequently the number of pests can be reduced.
