We realize that mining from groundwater has advantages and disadvantages, to provide advantages and disadvantages we must first know what the meaning of groundwater is. Groundwater known as aquifer is the water that satiates the cracks and openings of rocks and debris positioned beneath the surface of the ground. Some groundwater is protected because it is underground, thus leaving it purely clean and free from earth pollution. Now that the importance of groundwater has been established, the advantages and disadvantages of extracting it can be summarized (Kreifels, 2011). There are several advantages of groundwater extraction, for example it is good drinking water and beneficial for irrigation; it can be used all year round; can be found everywhere; it can be renewable as long as it is not contaminated or overused and is cost effective compared to most surface waters and water is not lost through evaporation. The disadvantages are that the cost is higher and there is impurity from the deeper well; streams are condensed into surface water; mandating the mixing of salt water with drinking water distributed near coastal regions; for years the groundwater has polluted the aquifers; soil is diminishing because groundwater is being overpumped and the aquifer is becoming depleted due to overdrawing (Miller & Johnson, 2010). Groundwater depletion is a problem in the United States and around the world because water is pulled from aquifers as quickly as they can replenish them. . One reason in particular why depletion occurs in the United States is that the population has increased and is constantly growing, which causes excessive pumping of groundwater. Some levels in the ground water... in the center of the paper... enough energy to keep the pump flowing. The third drawback of desalination is that a huge amount of salty wastewater is accumulated which is then needed for a place to reside. If salty wastewater were discharged into coastal oceans, it could cause harm to marine life and compromise food resources.
