Topic > Comparison between Bronislaw Malinowski and Ruth Benedict

Malinowski set the standard for effective ethnographic fieldwork, as well as contributing important and challenging theoretical concepts as a result of his work in the Trobriand Islands. He particularly focused on how cultural systems functioned to satisfy basic human psychological and biological needs. As a result, he became known for being adept at weaving his theoretical ideas into his ethnographic discussions, allowing him to support his ideas with evidence (McGee & Warms, 2008). On the other hand, Benedetto did little field research and preferred to use studies from other sources. Comparing the cultures of Southwestern Indian tribes, he concluded that each culture has a unique pattern, or cultural configuration, that determines the salient personality traits of its members. However, he offers no explanation or evidence for his theory. However, Benedict's ideas, along with those of Malinowski, remain popular concepts and still influence modern anthropologists
