Topic > Finding a Voice: Romeo and Juliet - 732

The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is a drama about the controversial role of authority that children have over their own lives. Juliet, at the beginning of the play, is willing to give anything for her parents. Romeo and Juliet's progression from obedient to independent is an important factor in the play. If Romeo and Juliet had obeyed their parents, they would not have died. Juliet would be married to Paris and Romeo would waste his days looking for love. However, no family feud would be concluded and no resolution would be achieved. In Romeo and Juliet there are three reasons why children should not always listen to their parents; parents don't always make you happy, finding your own voice can lead to self-confidence, and sometimes children are more willing to forget and forgive. Often parents want to make their children happy, but they don't know them well enough. A classic example of this is Juliet. When Tybalt died, Lord Capulet thought he could make up for Juliet's grief with a wedding. Capulet sees marriage to Juliet as a way to solve everyone's problems. In Act 3, scene 4, line 20, Capulet says, "Let it be Thursday, tell her she will be married to this noble earl." What Capulet doesn't know is his daughter's heart. She had already been married to Romeo and did not cry for Tybalt. In fact, he was sobbing over Romeo's banishment. “He and the bad guy are miles apart. God forgive him! I do it with all my heart." Juliet says in a brief aside during Act 3, scene 5, line 83. Lord Capulet could not know Juliet's feelings because he was not the kind of parent who would understand. Yes, in the beginning Capulet had every intention of making Juliet's dreams come true, but pride broke his good will. “But court his kind Paris, put yourself… in the middle of the paper… there is a great feud that has brought them together. They died together. In the last act and scene of the play on line 296, Capulet says: "O brother Montague, give me your hand, this is my daughter's joint, for I cannot ask for more." Indeed, for Juliet there was no better wedding gift than peace, but it came too late. Parents are not always right. They love and expect the best from you, but that doesn't mean they have to be obeyed forever. Humans make mistakes and age doesn't always give entitlement. In Romeo and Juliet there are three reasons why children should not always listen to their parents; parents don't always make you happy, finding your own voice can lead to self-confidence and sometimes children are more willing to forget and forgive.
