The freshman seminar revolves around the concept of finding our purpose in life. In the seminar the objective was to reflect on our past, present and future in order to better understand ourselves and discover in which direction we are going. Everyone's values shape a person into what they will be. Through discussion and course material we were able to examine and answer the question (Who am I? How did I become who I am? Who will I be in the world?) for our seminar. In class we looked at the Living Buddha, the Living Christ, the Poisonwood Bible, Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech, the film Promised Land, and more. Through the discussions we had in class about the materials we viewed we were able to get to know everyone as individuals making a statement in the world. Classmates expressed their opinions and experiences, making us see as a class that each of us is unique with planned aspirations to achieve. The course materials analyzed highlighted important factors to consider when making choices about who we will be in the world, such as education, passion, awareness, inspirations/influences, and dreams. Through education, many doors open for us to become leaders in the world. Education does not necessarily have to happen through school, but can also be a learning experience. As human beings, we learn every day, everything we understand we are able to use to make the best of it. Education is an important factor to consider when making a choice in my life. I aspire to become a pediatrician one day. In order to achieve my goal, education is a big obstacle to overcome. It takes many years of dedication and focus, as well as a plan to repay the loans. Education is an important factor because it is an expensive but rewarding factor to consider…halfway…that will become reality, if we have the courage to pursue them.” (). You really have to know that you want it and go for it. Don't give up on your dreams because they are your goals. Examining your dreams is the best way to find out what you want out of life. Thinking about who you will be in the world is a difficult thing, because who knows how your life will unfold, but having the right mindset about what you want to accomplish will help you figure out where you want to be in the future. Gary Ryan Blair, the author of The Goals Guy, said, “Do more than is required. What is the distance between someone who achieves their goals consistently and those who spend their lives and careers simply following them? The extra mile." (). Having important factors to rely on when making big decisions about your future can help you in the process of discovering who you were, are, and want to be.
