The Future is in Our Technology Our technological advancements are one of the major controversies in the world today. As time passes and we discover easier ways to do our daily work, our technology takes us further into the future and allows us to expand our possibilities. Drones or UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) are most popular in the military, but are commonly used to meet civilian needs. For example, Jeff Bezos, owner of the popular shopping site Amazon.com, hopes to have drones flying to deliver packages by early 2015 and make delivery more efficient while creating easier jobs for everyone in the shipping department. However, the United States primarily has control of drones for military use and in 2003 was the first to fire missiles at an enemy from a drone called the Predator. However, countries around the planet use drones for journalism, to prevent premature deaths, monitor crowded areas and protect the lives of police forces. On the other hand, drones have not always been used for the good of the cause. In some cases, civilians have been injured and there have been protests in several countries around the world. Pakistan, for example, is one such large country that believes that drones are evil and are simply a recipe for disaster. Events, such as protests, have occurred in the United States with the intent of limiting the deployment of drones in the military. The main objective is to prevent the use of drones when carrying out counter-terrorism and reconnaissance missions in third world countries. The purpose of these drones is to safely carry out tasks that would normally endanger troops, but drone strikes have recently come under scrutiny due to civilian deaths. Just like any new technology, there are positives and negatives to its use, and drones are no different. Many people wonder: “What will drones be capable of in the future and will I be adequately protected from their use?” Only time will tell.
