Usually during Thanksgiving break it's just me, my mom, and my aunt at the table. And that “dining table” is actually the coffee table in the living room. It seems very different from the generic setting of Thanksgiving dinner, with the whole family gathered around the big table in the kitchen, yet it doesn't faze me. I'm fine with how we celebrate Thanksgiving, it doesn't matter that there are only three of us; at least we can still celebrate the holiday. This year it was pretty much the same setup, but we had a fourth guest. A very good friend of mine. Aside from his presence, everything was pretty much the same as any other year. My mother prepared a good variety of foods, we ate on the living room table and talked and laughed with each other. It was a wonderful experience, like every other year. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? Get an original essay While we don't take a generic stance on how we prepare and eat our food, we certainly take a generic stance when it comes to the food itself. We usually eat duck, but this year we tried turkey, with stuffing, red cabbage, cranberry sauce, scalloped potatoes and apple pie. Everything tasted better than ever and it really made me appreciate the moment because I wouldn't eat this food any other time of the year. I could, if I really wanted to, but I feel like that food is only meant for that day. I simply wouldn't be able to appreciate it as much as I could during the holidays, and that makes me wonder, are these values I think I have for food on these holidays really about the food or the holiday itself? Thinking back to this Thanksgiving dinner, as well as all those in the past, I realize that we seem to view this holiday only as a time to appreciate our food and our family. In this, our values seem to lie in the holidays rather than the food. The food just serves as a sort of catalyst to keep the cheerfulness of the situation going. Sure, we're all very happy together and we take the time to eat the food, savoring every bite because we know this is only one moment a year, but who's to say that food brings out these values? Looking back now, I truly believe that the Thanksgiving holiday gives us a time like no other. It has an atmosphere all its own, different from Christmas, Easter and all the other holidays, and for this reason we will appreciate this moment as much as the 24 hours will allow us. My family, like many other families, will appreciate this time, taking the time to cook food and eat it, but will sadly go back to eating canned and microwaved foods the next day. It just seems to be the holiday mentality. You appreciate it as much as you can right now only because you know it will only come once a year, and after that you won't care anymore. To sum up all this rubbish, I believe there are a great deal of values present in the holiday of Thanksgiving, just because this holiday occurs once a year. If it were any other day, we would show our true value around food by eating quickly and ultimately not liking food..
