My group and I decided to do our own project on Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. I chose to be the set designer. This article will discuss my scene design process for the Act (scene) we are focusing on. My group decided to focus on Act 4 of Pygmalion because there were many other scene changes in the play and because this act is one of the main points of the play. I will also discuss what I have found in my research on Pygmalion. Now can you guess what the first thing I did for this project is? Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? Get an Original Essay The very first thing I did for Pygmalion was read the script! (Joe always in class made sure this was the first step). When I finished reading the play, I made a very quick and rough sketch of what came to mind as I read Act 4. Then I met with my group and we decided that the main theme or backbone of the opera was about the way people were using each other. Eliza was using Higgins to get noticed in the world and Higgins and Pickering were using her to win a bet. It was also decided that another theme of the show was about how we initially see people and how we continue to see them. Higgins saw Eliza as a flower girl, so that's what she will always be to him. Pickering on the other hand saw her as a lady, so to him she will always be a lady. With this in mind, I started doing some research to improve my design for Pygmalion. After discovering what the supporting structure of the work was, I looked for elements that would help me connect the design to the supporting structure. Now Pygmalion was written in 1913. This is also the same period in which the play is set. It is set in London, England. In 1913 London was a time of industrial revolution. There was also the women's suffrage movement, which may have been planted by author Bernard Shaw and which showed how women were treated then. The Industrial Revolution brought wealth and automobiles to much of England. This caused a class system of rich and poor, which Shaw may also have made a statement about. So I decided to implement high-class elements into the design of my scenes. Furthermore, in the play, when Higgins enters the room, he carelessly throws his coat onto the newsstand, while Pickering hesitates when he does so. This may show that Higgins doesn't care when he uses Eliza, and Pickering at least cares a little. So my project will grace the newsstand and have more of a showcase to show how they use it for housework, just like they did with Eliza. I then defined what the design needs were or (what the work specifically requires) of Pygmalion. I then researched the design styles of chair designs from the period in question because in the play Higgins and Pickering are sitting on chairs and talking. Eliza is also sitting on the piano stool. There is also talk of a piece of cloak. So I absolutely needed these items. These were the design requests for the scene. I then drew a second, better design from these ideas. Then I collected period photos of the items I needed to make a third and final project. I then transferred that drawing to a mockup of what my scene will look like. This is how I designed the scene for Act 4 of Pygmalion. I implemented elements from the historical period and elements that accompanied the backbone of the work.
