For this assignment I had to read two pieces; The Flowers by Alice Walker and Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie. Both poems were drastically different and each has its merits, but I preferred reading The Flowers. I have always been a fan of symbolism and allegory, so choosing this work was quite obvious to me. While I found Superman and Me fascinating and thought-provoking, I found it a bit clichéd. The Flowers is a work I had never read before and it gave me a great opportunity to explore the author's hidden meanings in the story. Say no to plagiarism. Get an Original Essay As previously stated, I really like symbolism and allegory, which would explain my love for Chris Nolan films and Avatar: The Last Airbender. How people choose to portray different aspects of a story often tells a lot about them and what they are going through. In The Flowers, Myop is a ten-year-old girl who wanders into the woods to pick flowers and venture out to see nature. He finds himself about a mile away from home and decides to turn back. On his way back, however, he discovers a body, which presumably belongs to a man who hanged himself. As he looks around, he notices the parts of the noose the man used among a pink rose. Finally, Myop laid down his flowers and declared that "summer was over." Symbolisms like this are extremely miraculous and fascinating to me. One of the most obvious clues is Myop's name, which is probably short for "short-sighted." Being shortsighted essentially means being nearsighted. Myop is a young and innocent ten-year-old girl who is most likely ignorant of the dangers and struggles of the world around her. The flowers represent her innocence and when she places them after seeing the body, it symbolizes her loss of innocence. Myop's distance from his home could represent the distance from anything else he has heard before. It would be extremely difficult for anyone to convince me that reading this article and understanding it is not fun. Please note: this is just an example. Many people (including myself) imagine boring, old, complex stories when we hear this word. Last semester, in my Greek Civilization class, we read some pieces of Greek literature. I didn't like them due to their complexity and strange choice of words. However, I enjoy stories and the occasional poem. I like reading about heroes and sacrifices, and literature has lots of stories involving them. Literature is much more than what many of us think it is. I think it's impossible not to love literature; he just needs to find the kind of literature he likes.
