Parts of speech show the function of a word in the context of its meaning and grammar in the sentence. Any word can perform the function of one or more parts of speech when used in different contexts. NOUNA Noun is a word that denotes the name of a person, place, thing, or idea. Proper nouns begin with a capital letter; common names begin with lowercase letters. Nouns can be singular or plural. Melissa, Delhi, watermelon and honesty are all examples of nouns. PRONOUNA the pronoun is a word used in place of a noun, most often for a specific noun. Pronouns are divided into the following types: personal pronouns that refer to particular people or things; possessive pronouns show ownership; reflexive pronouns place emphasis on another noun or pronoun; relative pronouns introduce a subordinate clause; and demonstrative pronouns indicate nouns. When a noun is replaced by a pronoun it is called antecedent. For example, Tom is a good teacher. He is very kind to his students. Tom is the antecedent, he and his are personal and possessive pronouns respectively. VERB The verb is an action word in a sentence. There are two types of verbs: main verb and auxiliary or auxiliary verb such as am, is, are, etc. A verb always agrees with its subject in number (singular/plural). Verbs change different forms to express tenses. E.g. run, dance, play are all verbs but if we have to express an action from the past then it will become run, danced, played, etc. ADJECTIVE An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. It usually answers the question of what kind, which one or how many. For example, adjectives are words like nice, sweet, lazy, etc. ADVERB An adverb is a word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs answer the questions where, when, why, how, what the conditions are and to what extent. Adverbs often end in -ly. For example quietly, quickly, quickly, etc. PREPOSITION A preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to form a sentence or to modify another word in the sentence. Prepositions usually indicate the position of the noun. For example in, on, with, above, below, next to, etc. CONJUNCTION A conjunction joins two words, phrases, or clauses. Coordinating conjunctions join two equals: and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet. Subordinating conjunctions join unequal clauses: because, although, while, since, etc. Remember: this is just an example.
