Bruce Willis once stated that “Art imitates life, and sometimes life imitates art. It's a strange combination of elements." And whether it's movies, TV shows, or even music, we are all exposed to and influenced by media. However, while the media can exert an influence on society, it is still a complicated business. Everything in entertainment starts as a business and how the audience responds/receives is what makes it social. This business can have both positive and negative effects on society. It all depends on how far the entertainment business goes. The entertainment business only cares about what it sells. If scary movies were really popular, this is what they would produce. Just like if rap or country music is popular, that's what they'll play on the radio. Films such as Noah, Heaven Is Real, God Is Not Dead, The Passion, and Son of God are all part of the recent surge in popularity and discussion around Bible-based entertainment. If something is popular and controversial it becomes a huge success. A great example of a controversial star is Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus is a perfect example of someone who tried one style and when it wasn't selling, she started doing the exact opposite. Miley Cyrus first made it big when she sang pop music like "Hannah Montana." As he grew up he started going in a different direction. Miley grew up on the country genre and has come out with a few country songs while her fan base, however, has not changed with her. Miley's country style wasn't selling. So, to make money, Miley became what she is today, a controversial, crazy and inappropriate star. Miley is a huge sensation right now for this reason and has a huge influence on society. Miley is known as the "queen of twerking" and... center of paper... has led many people in Tehran to awaken to the world around them and could very well spark change within the nation. It is these types of incidents that make up the social aspect of the entertainment business. Society has always mirrored the entertainment industry and I personally find that quite interesting. If you look at early TV shows, they were very morally sensitive. Married couples were never shown sleeping in the same bed, divorced couples were never shown, and children were never shown disrespecting their parents. So, naturally, society has also become very morally sensitive. Society began to change as the entertainment industry changed. Stars like Elvis Presley began to push the envelope and society followed, continuing the cycle. Taking us to where we are today. It will be interesting to see how far the envelope is pushed before it bursts.
