Eighty-eight countries participated in this Olympic event, which featured over 2,500 athletes (Wilkey, 2014). The athletes were able to broaden their knowledge of the cultures of the various competitors and build lasting friendships. This cross-cultural communication has led to a deep understanding of their competitors. Not only did the contestants gain experience, but the billions of people who watched television from around the world were also able to gain knowledge and participate in cultural exchange during this event.
