IndexWho Owns TechnologyPrivate Lives in the Public ArenaSurveillance is Always LegitimateWhen was the last time you spent an entire day without being bothered by technology? I personally can't remember a day when I didn't use any technology. My generation is constantly surrounded by technology and many of us want to be “cool” and “hip” and of course get the latest technology. This is why we are always connected. Many people get their work emails on their phone or tablet so that when they are away from the office they can still respond to emails. This therefore means that they are unable to separate home and work. They are constantly working, rather than thinking they are or not. Say no to plagiarism. Many times while at work I find myself with nothing to do and check social media. I don't think Miranda should be in trouble just for using social media or shopping online because an office job doesn't require your full attention at all hours. However, the statement “she feels that if she took any initiative to do additional tasks it would draw attention to the fact that she is not overly challenged” (Hartman & Desjardins, 2008) makes me angry. Just because you have some free time on your hands doesn't necessarily mean you aren't challenged. Plus, if you find yourself with nothing to do, there's someone in the office who could probably use a little more help at some point. Just because you help someone once doesn't mean they will keep coming back for help. I think maybe sometimes she should step out of the area where she feels comfortable and if someone can give her challenging work. It will be much better than getting paid to be on social media. Private Lives in the Public Arena This case fits with what I said earlier about the lack of separation between home life and work life. In my opinion, a company shouldn't treat you differently because of the lifestyle you choose to lead at home, as long as it doesn't harm any of the employees. However, there are some things that need to be left out of the business world. There are a lot of things we choose not to talk about with the people I work with because in my eyes they don't relate to what I'm doing, so why does it matter? However, if one day they noticed that I came in smelling of alcohol and it was obvious that I had been drinking, I would want them to send me home because it is a personal matter that I brought to the workplace that can in turn hurt another person. As far as technology goes, there is never a way to be absolutely certain that something we don't want others to see won't be seen. For this reason we should always choose what we post on our social media. I know many people who have the habit of simply posting whatever they want without worrying about who sees it. Surveillance is always legitimate I think surveillance in a work environment is sometimes very necessary. However, I don't think it should ever be used to warehouse employees unless they are informed that at some point they will be observed while they are at work. Even though Murray didn't tell them he was watching them, I think he should have told them after the fact so they knew why the changes were being made that were being made. I think the changes Murray made were positive and should be implemented. I think another thing that should be implemented is telling employees that there will be checks, 2016)
