As a student you have some advantages, such as discounts on food, cinema or other types of entertainment. David moved to France purely out of a desire to speak French. The story doesn't say whether David wants to settle down and stay in France, or simply return to New York. Say no to plagiarism. Everyone else is young, attractive, and well-dressed, which annoys him somewhat. The school he attends is international. Although he is not the only one who does not speak French well, he feels that everyone is ahead of him. He's alone in another country, which doesn't make it easy for him to meet new friends. In reality the story does not say that David has only one friend in France. According to him, he was expected to perform, which I disagree with. The teacher doesn't seem to care too much about his students' performance. He only sees the negative side in everything. I think the only one who has expectations of David is himself, which can also be difficult. The first day of school was very interesting for David, not only because he was finally able to measure his France against that of others. He learned very quickly that his French was not as good as some of the others. It seemed like everyone was so much better than David. I think you might have a hard time learning a language at 41. The first lesson was unexpected for David, as the teacher only seemed to make fun of his students and was quite grumpy. David has difficulty understanding entire sentences. The fact that everyone was talking so fast was a big problem for David. He began to doubt himself, wondering if he could ever learn it. The alphabet game was a setback for him too. Making fun of the Polish dressmaker Anna, the teacher realized that this journey would require hard work if he wanted to succeed. Since the story is written in first person, we get a nice insight into what's going on in The Mind of David. He seems to try to avoid his problems by being funny and making jokes. Some are funny though. The teacher ridiculed everything the pupils said, even making ridiculous and racist jokes about the optimistic Yugoslavian girl. He even makes jokes about genocide. You would probably get fired in Denmark if you said something like that to your student in front of the whole class. David describes the teacher as an animal, ready to strike for its prey. David spoke of his hatred of black pudding, intestinal pates, brain pudding and his love of IBM typewriters, bruises and his electric floor wax. He manages to fail several times by saying these few words. The teacher obviously starts making jokes about him. He probably expected it. The teacher simply continued, teasing German Eva and the other students. He thought the worst was over, but little did he know that this was just the beginning. Many times David uses random letters to show that he doesn't understand a word. He once again tries to be funny and hide his insecurity. The teacher speaks 5 languages fluently. It is forbidden to speak anything other than French at school, but the teacher sometimes uses English to insult students. One thing you can't tell from David is that he really tries. Work all night on essays. It seems to pay off as he clearly improves his French throughout the story. But the teacher seemed to succeed in destroying his students since David.
