ID Card Parents' Social Class I am from a small town known as Rutherfordton, North Carolina. I live with my parents and my younger brother. My parents were both born and raised in Rutherfordton. My mother lived a middle class lifestyle. Her parents divorced when she was young. Her mother remarried when my mother was young to a man with two daughters. My mother's father didn't remarry until my mother moved out. He married a woman with a daughter and a son. My mother always had everything she needed growing up. My mother graduated from high school and received her bachelor's degree in accounting. However, after earning her diploma she realized her heart was in teaching and returned to earn her teaching degree. She married my father at age 22 and had me when she was 24. Her parents had a daughter four years older than my father. His dad worked as a volunteer firefighter most of his life and my mom went to work after my dad started school because she wanted a new house. My father graduated from high school and immediately went to work. He worked for Duke Power and his father who owned a car cleaning company. My father also worked at the high school. My father now works for Rutherford Electric Membership Corporation and has been there since before I was born. He continues to climb the ladder in his work. My parents bought their first house when they got married and lived until they had saved enough to build a bigger house. We lived in my great grandparents' house, across the street from the house they were building for almost a year. My family and I have lived in our new home for ten years. Last summer my parents sold our house because they wanted to downsize since my brother and I are growing up and won't be living with them much longer. We are currently renting a house while my parents work on the land where they will build a new smaller house. Social class of
