Roman ArmyThe Roman army was one of the most powerful and successful armies in history. Their strength, organization, and size provided them with the necessities they needed to make successful battles possible for the Roman army. As a very organized force to be reckoned with, the Roman army was truly one of the greatest armies of all time. Specifically, the Roman army was primarily known for staying one step ahead of its opponents. “The core of Rome's military strength lay in the professionalism of its heavy infantry. A force that was organized and recognized as it evolved and adapted to survive the onslaughts of its mortal enemies and conquer the Western world." [The Roman Army] The Roman army reacted quickly enough to their threats that they were able to concentrate on the areas where they were least able to defend themselves. The military provided very limited social mobility, although they were very interactive with the civilians of their cities and influenced the politics of the time period. There were very strict disciplinary orders at times when soldiers went out of line or were disrespectful, however the Roman army provided them with basic living necessities and reduced their pay by the emperors. Roman soldiers were recruits around the ages of eighteen and twenty. Enlisted soldiers were sometimes also slaves purchased by the emperor. The soldiers came from all over the Roman Empire. Citizen soldiers would only be conscripted for a specific period of time, instead of being conscripted for Imperial period years of service. “Roman soldiers had to carry their own weapons, food, camping and sleeping gear. Being the commander in chief meant having control over the other six military tribunes, so it was one of the most important tasks of the Roman army. The Roman army had many advantages and disadvantages for their period of warfare. Their strategies, weapons and strength are what made them the best at what they did.
