An Unsuitable Job for a Woman The novel An Unsuitable Job for a Woman by PD James tells the story of Cordelia Gray, a female detective who is sent on a case to find the reason why the son of a famous scientist killed himself. Throughout the story we witness twists and turns and discover a shocking secret behind the murder of Mark Callender. The topics that will be covered will be the crime that occurred and how Cordelia solved the murder. Why Cordelia had hidden a second murder and what the implications of her actions are; finally, how his society, profession and solution relate to the title given to the book. Cordelia was a real change in how readers would look at detectives because it showed that there is so much more to Cordelia than what she feels for Mrs. Leaming because she lost her son, and wants to help her because Mark was an innocent bystander that was taken. by a corrupt man. Cordelia states "Is this what Mark would want?" to which Mrs Leaming replied “No. Mark never believed in punishment” (202). Cordelia is shown to have emotions towards the case even though she shouldn't, and because she can sense the sadness that Mrs. Leaming is showing for her son, she wants to make sure that justice is given to the right person. If Mrs. Leaming had to walk for justice to be done, Cordelia would make sure it happened one way or another. If the reader considers the legal aspect of her solution, Cordelia may end up in prison for contributing to the murder of Ronald Callender. He also helps stage the murder to make it look like he committed suicide now that he is adding to his list of crimes because he is tampering with a crime. Looking at the moral aspect, it can be deduced that Mrs. Leaming shooting Ronald Callender is wrong, this is something we are taught as children that taking another person's life is wrong. Cordelia helping Mrs. Leaming only furthers their lack of morality. This is because Cordelia let the murder take place and hides it because in her eyes the legal system may not have been in Mrs. Leaming's favor. She may have been found guilty, but neither Cordelia nor Mrs. Leaming had any knowledge of the future to know how she might be convicted. Cordelia should have let the legal system take its course and hoped the jury would understand why Mrs. Leaming took the course of action she did rather than take matters into her own hands. When you take a look at the emotional aspect of this novel, it's easy to think that you could just forget what happened, but it can be very draining for both parties. Knowing that someone was killed and you did nothing but sit back and watch the whole event unfold right before
