Facebook is one of the largest social networking sites in the world. Facebook was launched in February 2004 by some university students such as Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes as a site for Harvard students. Today Facebook is a public site; dominates worldwide, has gained popularity, changed American culture, and still remains one of the most used social media sites. Over 1 billion people have an active account. Facebook was created by a Harvard student by the name of Mark Zuckerberg, along with the help of his friends Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin and Chris Hughes. The original website was called "Facemash.com". Facemash was a sort of "hot or not" game for Harvard students, where visitors could compare two photos of students side by side and let them decide who was attractive and who wasn't. Mark was a computer science student and used his skills to hack into Harvard's security network and copy student ID photos. Days later, students found out and were contaminated, and Facemash was shut down by Harvard executives. Mark was charged with breach of security, breach of copyright, and invasion of individual privacy for stealing the students' photos, but those charges were later dropped. On February 4, Mark launched a new site called "thefacebook.com". He wanted to create a website that could connect people at the university. A few days after its launch, three Harvard seniors, Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra, accused Zuckerberg of stealing their ideas. The three elders filed a lawsuit against Mark and the matter was settled in court.
