Through telescreens and the Ministry of Truth in 1984, Orwell warns our society to be cautious about how much technology we let into our lives and keeping this in mind we must never mistake the security with freedom. This is extremely pertinent in Canadian society, especially with the recent discussion of Bill C-51 which will give the government and intelligence agencies more power to prevent further “terrorist” attacks, allowing them to easily access previously extremely private information, which include Health Canada Documents and Revenue Canada information. Although the Conservative government insists that the bill will help improve the safety and well-being of Canadians, there is still a fair amount of public outcry over privacy issues and restrictions on individual freedom of expression. If Orwell were alive today, he would have a very negative opinion of the bill, since it could lead to a society like that of Oceania, where the freedom of the individual is almost non-existent. While this may seem like an extreme situation, it is still a harsh reality that must be considered. To prevent this from happening, we must value our freedom and always keep it at the forefront of our minds. Orwell's message is a warning to us: technology must be controlled and freedom maintained. Governments must be monitored, so that they do not present a distorted message about the real applications of an enhanced program. If our freedoms are compromised, our society will soon become like Oceania in the 1990s
