The ability to communicate effectively is an essential skill that plays a crucial role in the nursing profession. Through ineffective communications, language and attitudes, the video titled “Effective Communication in Nursing” suggests that proper professional nursing practice positively impacts health outcomes and patient care. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) National Competency Standards for the Professional Nurse, within collaborative and therapeutic care, are closely related to the issues presented in the clip. From the perspective of the nurse, patient and health outcomes, Competencies 9.1, 9.2 and 9.4 are examined to support the importance of appropriate nursing practice and patient-centred care. To improve patient satisfaction, a patient-centered approach to care must be applied. According to Fenton (2012, para. 1), patient satisfaction has been used as a measure of the quality of nursing care. A study conducted by Suhonen (2012) found that personalized care is associated with positive patient outcomes, such as patient satisfaction. By communicating effectively with the patient and treating them with respect and dignity, we can significantly improve patient care. Treating patients, consumers, healthcare workers and families with dignity and respect improves satisfaction (The Australian Safety and Quality Health Service, 2014). This relates to Competency 9.1 within Collaborative and Therapeutic Care in the ANMC Competency Standards which require nurses to demonstrate empathy, trust and respect for the dignity and potential of the individual or group. This is strongly exemplified in the first half of the video where the nurse is distracted by other means, such as telephone conversations and her laptop... middle of paper... effectiveness and patient, family and personal satisfaction. Patient satisfaction is an indicator of the quality of care. Some aspects that can improve patient care are respecting the patient, fostering a culture that promotes open communication, maintaining eye contact, and listening without interruptions that convey interest and respect for another's point of view . Nurses can communicate well with patients when they use a patient-centered approach. Communication is patient-centered and can greatly influence the development of a positive nurse-patient relationship, which is essential to providing quality patient care. Through effective communication and professional practice, patient care and outcomes can be substantially improved. Nurses can have an impact on a person's life, remember that patients almost always remember their nurse; they rarely remember the doctor.
