One option is something Premont High School has employed: eliminating sports from the schools altogether. This option worked well for Premont; it saved them money, improved their academics, and helped reduce behavioral problems (5-8). The only foreseeable problem, other than community disapproval, would be that the school would have to cut all other extracurricular activities. The most moderate, and perhaps sensible, solution would be to significantly reduce the budget allocated to high school sports. The majority of funding would go to academics, and all extracurricular activities and organizations would receive the same amount of funding. Regardless of the solution schools adopt, there will be resistance from the community, but a solution is necessary. Academics are a non-negotiable factor of schools, and as a society, we seem to want to overlook it. Education shapes the future of America and the world; it is unlikely that football will be enough to help us make the world a better one
