The diverse era of rock and roll existed concurrently with the movement to grant civil rights to African Americans in the creation of a new genre of music. When it first became known, with its wild sound and influence on a younger audience involving sex, drugs and a social change from the norms of the past, white, religious, middle class and older groups it interpreted as a bold and obscene musical genre. Adults primarily disapproved of Rock and Roll's sexual lyrics and its performers due to the rebellious attitudes it created that came from African-American culture. In most cases, parents did not like white youth listening to “black-sounding” music and attending concerts where half the audience and performers were black. Changing racial attitudes and the popularity of rock and roll music encouraged white American racial barriers to be threatened by black and white teenagers. It spread further thanks to the appeal of Rock and Roll songs to younger audiences, gaining ever-increasing popularity. As Glenn Altschuler, acclaimed author and Cornell University professor, quotes, "Rock 'n' roll provided a new perspective, however, celebrating leisure, romance and sex, mocking deferred gratification... and delighting in the separate world of the adolescent". The rapid success of Rock and Roll spread among teenagers who promoted emerging artists, whether black or white, causing segregation to slowly dissolve and integration to come into play. This shift from the earlier lifestyles and behaviors of the 1950s to different, more relaxed attitudes regarding lifestyles and behaviors largely comes from the huge contrast in musical styles, both vocal and instrumental. Rock and Roll was ultimately controversial due to black, medium of paper, influence and sensuality compared to other musicians of his time and age. The illustrious artists of the Rock and Roll generation produced innovations in music, style and influences, in turn building a new genre of acclaimed sound. Rock and roll was also the birth of black and white sound mixing, and the availability of radio in cars and homes made it possible to do this. Additionally, teenagers across the nation spurred the popularity of Rock and Roll and pushed it to become one of the most beloved and controversial sounds of music, with adult audiences arguing against its perceived message. Mainly, Rock and Roll was a sound that united young people and different races, even with the disagreement of the white older groups, remaining for its importance and emphasis on new music, becoming in return one of the most famous genres in the history of music..
