Spirituality is a concept that everyone in the world participates in, whether they are fully aware of it or not. Personally, I have always considered myself a spiritual person; however, I never realized that spirituality doesn't necessarily have to be part of a religion. I considered myself spiritual because I consistently attended church on Sunday mornings, Bible study on Wednesday evenings, and youth group activities during the weeks. My sense of spirituality always involved some sort of religion until I got to college. While I was in college, I gained a new sense of spirituality through this course. The Fundamentals of Spiritual Life has so far taught me various types of spiritual practices that I had never talked about. Sitting meditation was discussed in Thich Nhat Hanh's book "Peace is Every Step" on pages 16, 17 and 18. Hanh stated "sometimes, we can use meditation as a way to hide from ourselves" (page 17 ) I found the meditation very relaxing as I followed the technique of focusing on the inhalation and then the exhalation I actually started to be relaxed enough and focused on the breathing so much so that I was able to completely tune in to the outside world. hands crossed on my stomach, feet crossed, and I was lying on my back on top of the bed covers while meditating. Because I wasn't sitting up, I could feel myself slipping into a deeper sleep; however, I stayed awake focusing on my breathing I tried this practice I had trouble because my thoughts would drift; however, I didn't allow my thoughts to wander after the first day because I was so focused. While trying these spiritual practices I have learned that it is extremely easy to become distracted or tell yourself there is no time for such practices, but there is time. Even taking just two or three minutes to take a moment and meditate could be quite refreshing. Meditating reminded me of the insights I mentioned above because of living (thinking) in the moments and just going for it. During meditation things were so free and simple that they could be explored even by thinking about the topic
