In Kathyrn Woodward's book Identity and Difference she delves into her own identity. Struggling with identity is bound to happen because one might have a different perspective of the world, determined by one's community, ethnicity, or even social class. Furthermore, identity gives us a certain place in the world where one can be in contact with the society in which one lives. While much of identity is used to show the difference between each other, it can also be used to show how similar one is to the other. Identity, however, can be used to distinguish one group from another. In the apartheid and genocide in Rwanda, Hutus were seen killing Tutsis due to social class differences where Tutsis were apparently richer, taller and of higher social status than Hutus. Social class differences contribute to how one perceives another identity over another. Much of what constitutes a person's identity has to do with culture, not least because the way culture shapes a person is due to their experience. This experience of cultures is what makes each individual different from the other and also contributes to their own ideas and morals. Identity can be used to separate one person from another, but it can also be used to see how similar they are
