Topic > The effects of autism on children with autism - 1192

In my article I will talk about the impact that autistic disorder has and the effects on a child's development in the physical, cognitive and socio-emotional areas. I will explain the cause of this disorder along with the behaviors that a child with autism has and the symptoms known for this disorder. Autism is a brain development disorder that makes it difficult to process information. For example, children with autism have “different areas of the brain that fail to work together” (WebMD, 2014, p.1), which results in language delays, communication difficulties, and strange or unusual behaviors. Autism is usually recognized before the age of 3, when the child has a lack of development or when he has symptoms that will be explained later in the article. The causes of autism have not yet been found, although "scientists believe that genes and environmental factors... there is also a 30% chance that a child will develop autism if a sibling has it" (kidshealth , 2014, p.2). Furthermore, “thimersal in vaccines is believed to be the cause of this disorder, although it has not been proven” (Boyd & Bee, 2010, p.210). Additionally, there is a treatment for this disorder which will be explained further in this document along with resources that support children and families with this disorder. Autism disorders affect the child's three domains of development involving the body, thinking, and emotions, which is what will be explained later. Physical Domain Additionally, a child with autism “affects one or all of the sensory areas of touch, vision, hearing, taste, and smell” (Wall, 2004, p.79). This means that the child may be very sensitive or not sensitive at all, which can make the child feel very uncomfortable… middle of paper… at age 3, children can get help from “Individuals with Disabilities” Education Act (IDEA)” who continue with treatments (kidshealth, 2014, p.3). Additionally, once your child enters kindergarten, the local school district can also provide help in continuing your child's treatment. Therapies that help address autistic disorder are “behavioral, educational, language, and occupational therapies” (kidshealth, 2014, p.2). With the help of these therapies the child will be able to overcome many of the obstacles that autism entails and will be able to help him live a better life. Furthermore, medications are also used to treat some symptoms such as “aggression towards oneself or others, inattention problems, obsessive-compulsive disorders and mood swings” (kidshealth, 2014, p.2). You can also get help by contacting your doctor, school, churches, and local autism advocacy groups.
